The 4 Best Ways To Slow Aging and Have Younger Looking Skin
I was raised on the beach in sunny, dry Southern California. I have a light peachy complexion and never used sunscreen. Now that I am in my 50s and after overcoming a major illness, my skin is stating to show wear and tear. I wondered if there was anything that could be done to smooth my skin short of a full body peel?
It turns out that skin ages two ways:
1. Intrinsic skin aging is your chronological aging. It affects your skin in the same way it affects all your internal organs, so having youthful looking skin is intimately connected to total health.
2. Extrinsic aging is due to external factors and environmental influence, like too much sun exposure and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. You can also age more rapidly due to smoking, pollution, sleep deprivation and poor nutrition.
So, that old adage; “beauty is only skin deep definitely doesn’t apply here! Your beautiful skin is dependent on the wellness of your whole being, both inside and out. The look of your skin tells you how your organs are doing.
Of course, preventing skin damage by staying out of the sun is a great strategy. But, what about people like me, where the damage has already been done?( I have always loved the warm rays of the sun, sitting on the sand and listening to the waves or jogging on the shore.)
The bottom line is anti-aging, healthy skin and phytochemically-rich nutrition are intimately linked. Aging is partially due to reactive oxygen species (better known as free radicals) and we can fight ROS through epigenetic mechanisms, which can turn on your DNA to protect your skin and your organs!
What turns these genes on?
We can use:
- Exercise
- Calorie Restriction
- Anti-stress Practices
- Phytochemicals
as weapons against aging and sagging, collagen-starved skin. If you want to look and feel better, all of these things must be practiced on a regular basis. This means moderate exercise, anti-stress techniques and fresh, nutrient rich fruits and vegetables should be used each and every day.
If you would like to learn more about anti-aging and having younger looking skin, these subjects will be covered in more detail in coming blogs:

Until then,
Hugs, health and happiness,
